Smoke on the Mountain
APRIL 14 - MAY 14, 2011
The award-winning Off-Broadway musical
Smoke on the Mountain has become a world-wide hit. With its heartfelt gospel songs and down-to-earth characters, this musical is a celebration of life, love and bluegrass gospel at its finest.
Smoke on the Mountain takes place in 1938 at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Mount Pleasant, North Carolina. The Great Depression is coming to an end, and the Sanders Family Singers are back on the road again. Of course the bus just broke down, the twins are fighting again, Uncle Stanley’s fresh out of prison and sister June still can’t really sing.
The play presents a Saturday Night Gospel Sing featuring the Sanders Family in their first night back on the gospel circuit in five years. The play uses a cast of seven with the audience being the congregation.
Pastor Oglethorpe, a young and enthusiastic minister, has enlisted the Sanders Family in his efforts to bring his tiny congregation into the “modern world.” Opening night jitters combined with the disdain of a pair of spinsters, the church’s chief benefactors, keep the evening on the verge of chaos. Between songs, the family members “witness,” or tell personal stories that relate to their trials of faith. After this night, Mount Pleasant Baptist Church will never be the same.
